Grenfell Tower: a Visual Impact Assessment

A Visual Impact Assessment (VIA) is a document used by local planning authorities, architects and developers to identify the effects of a new development on the surrounding townscape. Usually images of the development are superimposed on photographs of the existing area. Thus the likely visual impact of the development can be assessed. In the early hours of 14 June 2017 a fire tore through the 24-storey Grenfell Tower block of flats in North Kensington, West London. It claimed 72 lives and caused injury, trauma and hardship to many more. The ensuing public inquiry has become as controversial as the fire itself and continues five years on.
